July 15th Windsor Great Park
Removal of encroaching, competing laurel
from a rare population of spurge laurel. The site is within
Windsor Forest in an area with restricted public access. Ted
Green of the Ancient Tree Forum has identified this population
of spurge laurel as one of the best in East Berkshire. This
plant Daphne
Laureola
(totally unrelated to the alien laurel we are
more familiar with) is uncommon nationally and flowers early
in the year. It is an indicator of ancient woodland, particularly
on alkaline soils.

This task gives us an opportunity to see a part of Windsor
Great Park not easy to access and to help the survival of an
unusual plant.

Meet just off the B3022 (Winkfield Road) near the lodge house.

August 26th Windsor Great Park – Great Meadow
Pond
We are goint to be cutting and/or pulling
small sallow and birch in the shallow margin of this large
pond. The pond has a large reedbed of wildlife value. The
area where we have our task was dredged to remove surface
sediment in order to permit further expansion of the reedbed.
It has already been colonised in part by sallows and birch,
especially at it’s margin. Our aim is to reduce this rate
of colonisation.

Enter park by Blacknest Gate (explain the purpose of
your visit if asked). Proceed by car across two arms of
Virginia Water, then past the Polo Ground. Then turn sharp
left at the WMCV sign and follow these to the old Sewage
Farm. It’s 2 miles from Blacknest Gate to Great Meadow
Pond, so don’t park at Blacknest car park. Wellies/waders
could well be needed. We will provide waders but don’t
have all sizes.
